If you still believed that civilisation would continue to progress and that every passing year would bring further enlightenment, 2016 will certainly have put any such foolish thoughts out of your mind.

It is now pretty clear that we have been travelling in reverse gear for some time – probably since, say, around 1979.

Brexit and the election of Donald Trump seized most of the attention in 2016, but there was much else to be depressed about. And if you are not at least a teeny bit depressed about it, then you haven’t been paying attention.

There is always hope. As I have written previously, we therapists are fond of saying everything will turn out all right in the end – and if it’s not all right, it’s not the end. But if you are not, like me, the super-optimistic type, there is much that might have caught your attention.
